AUSTIN, TEXAS, APRIL 28, 2015 – The International Order of the Golden Rule (OGR) is proud to announce John Dallas Slack, CFSP, Vice President of Slack Funeral Home, Ellicott City, MD as the winner of the 2015 Golden Light Award. OGR is the world’s leading professional association dedicated to making independent funeral homes exceptional. The Golden Light Award is the association’s highest honor, and it recognizes an individual who has made specific, meritorious contributions to society through his or her profession, community or field of voluntary service as career achievements.

OGR President Bud Wieting announced Slack as the award winner during the association’s Annual Conference and Supplier Showcase in Orlando, FL on April 25.  J.D. is a second-generation funeral director and embalmer, and has managed his family funeral home since 1983.

Wieting said, “J.D.’s work on OGR’s strategic planning and membership task forces have helped shape OGR onto the organization it is today. He never asks for recognition. Instead, he simply wants OGR and its members to thrive.”

His civic involvement has included being a member of the Howard County Cemetery Advisory Board, The Howard County Historical Society, a member of the Board of Directors for Mountain View Cemetery, a member of the Board of Directors for the Ellicott City Volunteer Fireman's Association, a Technical Consultant for the Governor's Task Force on Infant Mortality, membership in Optimist, Rotary, Elks, Jaycees and coaching youth sports. J.D. and his wife Patti have five children and eight grandchildren.
